What is city tax?

City tax (also called visitor tax, spa fee, guest tax or tourism levy) is a municipal charge paid by overnight guests in many tourist destinations. It funds tourist infrastructure such as beaches, spa gardens, hiking trails or guest cards. Each municipality sets the amount by bylaw — usually as a fixed amount per person and night.

In larger cities there is often a bed tax, overnight tax or city tax instead — usually a percentage of the room price (e.g. Cologne 5%, Berlin 7.5%) or tiered by price (Hamburg). Business-related stays are frequently exempt there. This calculator covers both models.

Frequently asked questions about city tax

What is city tax?

City tax is a municipal charge for overnight guests in tourist destinations. It funds tourist facilities such as spa gardens, beaches or guest cards and is usually charged per person and night. Each municipality sets the exact amount by bylaw.

Who is exempt from city tax?

Commonly exempt are children and teenagers below a certain age (depending on the municipality usually 6, 15 or 18 years), people with severe disabilities and — for bed taxes in larger cities — business-related stays with appropriate proof. The exact exemptions are listed in the respective bylaw.

How high is the bed tax in my city?

It depends on the municipality. In Berlin it is 7.5% of the net room price, in Cologne 5%, in Hamburg a fixed amount tiered by price, and in many spa towns a fixed amount of €1.50 to €4.00 per person and night. Pick your city in the calculator to see the exact amount.

Do children have to pay city tax?

In most municipalities children and teenagers up to a defined age are exempt from city tax or pay a reduced rate. Depending on the location, the threshold is typically between 6 and 18 years. The calculator automatically applies the stored exemptions.

Is city tax included in the room price?

Not always. Some accommodations show city tax separately on the invoice, others add it to the room price. On a proper invoice the city tax should appear as a separate line item. Hotels increasingly use tools like zimrly that show the tax automatically and correctly.

Do you run a hotel or guesthouse? zimrly adds city tax and bed tax to every guest invoice automatically and bylaw-compliant — on top of your existing PMS.
